Lesson 36 Handout (PDF)

President Ezra Taft Benson: "In the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for preparing for the Second Coming." (Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p59)

3 Nephi 1-5

READ 3 Nephi 1:4-9. Events leading up to the signs announcing the birth of the Savior.

The rise of the Gadianton robbers.

3 Nephi 6

A few short years after the great battle against the Gadianton robbers, the record states that "there became a great inequality in all the land, insomuch that the church began to be broken up" (v14)

READ 3 NEPHI 6:15-18.

3 Nephi 7

The chief judge of the land was murdered (v1).

In the aftermath of that destruction, the people divided into factions (tribes) of family, kindred, and friends. The government of the land was destroyed (v2).

Consider again President Benson's statement that within the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for the Second Coming.

Gospel Doctrine Notebook

Record your thoughts on the events recorded in 3 Nephi 1-7. How can an understanding of these chapters motivate you to be more diligent in obeying the commandments? What are the consequences for disobedience? Personally? As a community? As a nation?
