Introduction

WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THE BOOK OF ETHER?

WHY DO YOU THINK GOD PRESERVED THE RECORD OF THE JAREDITES? WHY IS THIS RECORD IMPORTANT FOR US TODAY?

Ether 1

Ether 1 provides a genealogy from Ether (the original author of this account) back to Jared. Notice the different types of names from those found elsewhere in the Book of Mormon. A witness that this record was born out of a different time.

Use of the name Jaredites.

The name of the brother of Jared.

In Ether 1 we begin to learn of the faith of the brother of Jared. In fact, his faith was so great that his brother, Jared, had faith in his faith.

Ether 2

Following the instructions of the Lord, the people of Jared left the land and went down into the valley Nimrod, which was northward.

"And it came to pass at the end of four years that the Lord came again unto the brother of Jared, and stood in a cloud and talked with him. And for the space of three hours did the Lord talk with the brother of Jared, and chastened him because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord." (Ether 2:14)

The record says that the people of Jared were "directed continually by the hand of the Lord" (v6).

A land of Promise.

Preparing to cross the sea.

Ether 3

  1. The brother of Jared prepared stones and called upon the Lord and prayed, "And I know, O Lord, that thou hast all power, and can do whatsoever thou wilt for the benefit of man; therefore touch these stones, O Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in darkness; and they shall shine forth unto us in the vessels which we have prepared, that we may have light while we shall cross the sea" (Ether 3:4).
  2. READ ETHER 3:6-13.

Ether 4-6

"And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are." (Ether 4:7)

READ ETHER 4:11-12.

Ether 5:  Moroni writes of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon.

Ether 6:  The people of Jared sail to the promised land and establish themselves upon the land.
