“Looking Forth for the Great Day of the
Lord to Come”
The Savior will return to the earth in power and great glory.
The Millennium will be a time of joy and peace.
We must prepare for the Second Coming.
A study of this lesson will help us understand and recognize the signs of the
Second Coming and prepare for “the great day of the Lord to come” (D&C

The Great Day of the Lord to Come
Nearly 2000 years ago, just a few days before his death, Jesus went up
to the mount of Olives. In a discussion with his disciples they asked,
"what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"
(Matthew 24:3). The Master then listed some of the signs that
would indicate that his second coming was near.
The ancient Church has been restored in our day in its fulness to prepare
the world for the second coming of the Savior. As part of that restoration,
we have received additional revelation that speaks of the second coming
and the signs that proceed it.
From my days as a youth, I have been fascinated with the "signs of the
times." Like others, I have speculated on the time that the Master
will return to begin his millennial reign. While growing up in my
parent's home, I came across a book first published in 1931, The
Last Days. It was a compilation of prophecies made by latter-day
prophets, apostles, and others. I was intrigued with the prophecies
and wondered if I might live to see their fulfillment.
IS IT APPROPRIATE TO SPECULATE ON THE TIME OF THE SAVIOR'S RETURN?
Joseph Smith: "Jesus Christ never did reveal
to any man the precise time that he would come. Go and read the scriptures,
and you cannot find anything that specified the exact hour he would come;
and all that say so are false teachers." (HC, 6:254)
The Savior revealed through the Prophet regarding his return, "...but
the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor
shall they know until he comes" (D&C 49:7).
If the Savior himself has withheld this information, it has been done for
a sacred purpose. To speculate on his return serves no worthwhile
WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THE LORD HAS WITHHELD THIS INFORMATION?
Brother Kent P. Jackson made this comment: "The
deliberate suspense that is generated by anticipation and uncertainty in
the hearts of the Saints serves an important function in the Lord's training
of his people. While we wait, not knowing the day of his coming, we prepare.
If we knew, some would find occasion to procrastinate their repentance.
But keeping the uncertainty of the future in focus enables us to prepare
continually—not only individually, but collectively as a Church as well."
(Studies In Scripture, 1:187)
Though the Lord has not revealed the time of his coming, he has not left
us in the dark. He has revealed "signs" that indicate to us that
his return is approaching. They serve as a reminder or warning that
we need to continue our preparation for his return.
- A few years ago I went camping with my children east of Mount Rainier. When
we left, the day was warm, clear, and calm. The beautiful weather
continued throughout the following day when we went fishing on
a mountain lake. The shores were crowded with people fishing, playing
in the water, and rafting. On the third day, we returned to the lake. It was cooler and the wind had picked up. Scattered clouds were blowing
across the sky. By the time we decided to return to camp, there were
few people around the lake and the wind was cooler and stronger. It was clear to me that the weather was changing. That evening,
I made sure that everything that needed to be under cover was either in
the car or in the tent. The following morning, the clouds and wind
continued. There was a light mist. I hurried our preparations to leave
camp and we were packed up and ready to leave by mid-morning. We had not been in the car five minutes when the rain began pouring down. I did not know how soon the storm would hit, but I was glad that
we heeded the signs of approaching bad weather. Otherwise, our gear
and ourselves would have been soaked. It would have been a miserable
trip home and a nasty job of cleaning and drying our gear.
- We are blessed in our day to have received additional revelation that warns
us of the approaching storm, the glorious return of the Savior, and the
advent of his millennial reign. In this lesson, we will focus on
a few of those signs as contained in the Doctrine and Covenants.

Signs of the Times, the Second Coming, & the Millennium
|"Ye look and behold the fig-trees, and ye see them with your eyes,
and ye say when they begin to shoot forth, and their leaves are yet tender,
that summer is now nigh at hand; Even so it shall be in that day when they
shall see all these things, then shall they know that the hour is nigh.
And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth
for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming
of the Son of Man. And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall
be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath." (D&C
The Gospel To Be Restored.
"And when the times of the Gentiles is come in,
a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall
be the fulness of my gospel" (D&C 45:28).
"This light is the 'fulness of the gospel,' as
revealed through the Prophet Joseph. It came at the time of the end."
(D&C Commentary, p28)
The Gospel To Be Preached To The World.
"Send forth the elders of my church unto the nations
which are afar off; unto the islands of the sea; send forth unto foreign
lands; call upon all nations, first upon the Gentiles, and then upon the
Jews" (D&C 133:8).
"And this gospel shall be preached unto every
nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people" (D&C 133:37).
Heber J. Grant: "A sure indication of the
great event, as specified by the Lord Himself, was and is that the Gospel
of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world. The missionary service
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attests the progressive
fulfilment of this prediction." (quoted in Companion To Your Study of
the Old Testament, p61)
Elder Bruce R. McConkie: "This restored
gospel will reveal the true God and make his laws known. It shall go to
all men before the hour of his judgment arrives. It will prepare a people
for that dreadful day....
"When the prophetic word
says the gospel shall be preached in every nation, it means every nation.
It includes Russia and China and India. When it speaks of every kindred
and people, it embraces the people of Islam and the believers in Buddha.
When it mentions every tongue, it includes all the confusing dialects of
all the sects and parties of men. The gospel is to go to them all. And
the Lord will not come until it does." (Millennial Messiah,
When Elder McConkie wrote these prophetic words, the Soviet empire had
not yet collapsed. Since then, the gospel has been carried to nearly
every eastern European country, including Russia. Temples are now
being planned and built in countries that we only dreamed of preaching
in just a few years ago. The gospel is being preached in India and
in many nations of Africa. Though the great peoples of Islam and
mainland China have yet to hear the word of God, we have seen how quickly circumstances can
D&C 88:88-89 tells us that after the testimony is given the signs will
become more prominent.
The Jews To Be Gathered.
After speaking of the destruction of Jerusalem and the scattering of the
Jews, the Lord said, "But they shall be gathered
again" (D&C 45:25; see also
Joseph Smith: "Judah must return, Jerusalem must
be rebuilt, and the temple . . . It will take some time to rebuild the
walls of the city and the temple, etc.; and all this must be done before
the Son of Man will make his appearance." (TPJS, p286)
In 1948 the nation of Israel was formerly recognized by the United Nations. Jews from throughout
the world began returning to Palestine in the late 1800s as a place of
refuge. A flood of Jews poured into Palestine during and after the
tragedy of World War II. They have defended their nation in four
separate wars. As Elder George Q. Morris stated at the April 1960
General Conference, "I think now we may well say they
[Jews] have gathered." This
An Increase in Iniquity.
"And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity
shall abound" (D&C 45:27).
President Ezra Taft Benson: "Yet in undiminished
fury, and with an anxiety that his time is short (and it is), Satan, that
great adversary to all men, is attempting to destroy all that we hold dear.
"We constantly hear or
read of wars and rumors of wars. Atheism, agnosticism, immorality, and
dishonesty are flaunted in our society. Desertion, cruelty, divorce, and
infidelity have become commonplace, leading to a disintegration of the
family. Truly we live in the times of which the Savior spoke, when 'the
love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound'." (Come
Unto Christ, p111)
"...men will harden their hearts against me, and
they will take up the sword, one against another, and they will kill one
another" (D&C 45:33).
Joseph Smith: "I saw men hunting the lives of their own sons, and
brother murdering brother, women killing their own daughters, and daughters
seeking the lives of their mothers. I saw armies arrayed against armies.
I saw blood, desolation, fires. The Son of Man has said that the mother
shall be against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother. These
things are at our doors. They will follow the Saints of God from city to
city. Satan will rage, and the spirit of the devil is now enraged. I know
not how soon these things will take place; but with a view of them, shall
I cry peace? No! I will lift up my voice and testify of them." (HC, 3:391.)
The Whole Earth in Commotion.
"And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors
of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men's hearts shall
fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the
end of the earth" (D&C 45:26).
Consider the number of devastating wars that have criss-crossed the world
since the time of this revelation. The most brutal and violent war
of all time was only a few decades ago. Peace continues to be elusive
as we continue into the new millennium.
"And they shall behold blood, and fire, and vapors
of smoke" (D&C 45:41).
According to Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Section 45 is a continuation of
great discourse delivered on the mount of Olives....
"To understand the nature
of the signs and wonders here promised, it is helpful to try and put one's
self in the position of the ancient apostles to whom the words were originally
spoken. They lived under what we would consider to be comparatively primitive
conditions. Travel was at donkey-speed; wars were fought with swords and
spears; and the speediest communication was pigeon-slow.
"From their standpoint
surely railroads and airplanes, radio and television, and satellites orbiting
the earth, were signs and wonders on earth and in heaven. Vapors of smoke
remind one of atomic explosions; blood and fire mean war and desolation,
all on a scale beyond the imagination of people two thousand years ago."
(Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 1:277-278)
"And there shall be men standing in that generation,
that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a
desolating sickness shall cover the land" (D&C 45:31).
President Spencer W. Kimball: "Our world
is in a turmoil. It is aging toward senility. It is very ill. . . .
"Today is another day,
but history repeats itself. We read the headlines. The great powers warn
and threaten. Bombs are detonated. Terror is substituted for reason. Defense
stockpiles increase. Nuclear races get swifter. The radios whine. The newspapers
carry glaring headlines, politicians wrangle, students and authorities
harangue. Everybody expresses opinions, but few approach the real cause
or the real cure.
"What is this illness?
Its symptoms are manifest in every corner of the globe. They are found
among men in high places, in hut and mansion. Its symptoms are carelessness,
casualness, covetousness, slothfulness, selfishness, dishonesty, disobedience,
immorality, uncleanness, unfaithfulness, ungodliness. . . ."
(CR, Sep 1961)
Great Natural Disasters.
"And there shall be earthquakes also in divers
places, and many desolations" (D&C 45:33).
"For after your testimony cometh the testimony
of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men
shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand" (D&C
Elder M. Russell Ballard: "Recently I read
a newspaper article that cited statistics from the U.S. Geological Survey
indicating that earthquakes around the world are increasing in frequency
and intensity. According to the article, only two major earthquakes (earthquakes
measuring at least six on the Richter scale) occurred during the 1920s.
In the 1930s the number increased to five, and then it decreased to four
during the 1940s. But in the 1950s, nine major earthquakes occurred, followed
by fifteen during the 1960s, forty-six during the 1970s, and fifty-two
during the 1980s. Already almost as many major earthquakes have occurred
during the 1990s as during the entire decade of the 1980s."
(Ensign, Nov 1992)
Elder Dallin H. Oaks: "These signs of the Second Coming are all around us and
seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity. For example, the list of major
earthquakes in The World Almanac and Book of Facts, 2004 shows twice as many
earthquakes in the decades of the 1980s and 1990s as in the two preceding
decades (pp. 189–90). It also shows further sharp increases in the first several
years of this century. The list of notable floods and tidal waves and the list
of hurricanes, typhoons, and blizzards worldwide show similar increases in
recent years (pp. 188–89). Increases by comparison with 50 years ago can be
dismissed as changes in reporting criteria, but the accelerating pattern of
natural disasters in the last few decades is ominous." (Ensign, May
"And also cometh the testimony of the voice of
thunderings, and the voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and
the voice of the waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds"
"And there shall be a great hailstorm sent forth
to destroy the crops of the earth" (D&C 29:16).
Elder Melvin J. Ballard: "Oh, that men would
hear the voice of the elements proclaiming repentance, and if they shall
not hear it they shall be visited with dire calamity, for this is the day
of settlement, the day of reckoning, the hour of God's judgment has come.
I rejoice not in the prospects of the chastisement that awaits the nations
of the earth, I would that they would save themselves. The means is yet
at hand. By repentance and by turning to the Lord Jesus Christ they may
find that salvation, but without it there is no salvation for this world."
(CR, Oct 1923)
Brigham Young: "When the testimony of the
Elders ceases to be given, and the Lord says to them, 'Come home; I will
now preach my own sermons to the nations of the earth,' all you now know
can scarcely be called a preface to the sermon that will be preached with
fire and sword, tempests, earthquakes, hail, rain, thunders and lightnings,
and fearful destruction. . . . You will hear of magnificent cities, now
idolized by the people, sinking in the earth, entombing the inhabitants.
The sea will heave itself beyond its bounds, engulphing mighty cities.
Famine will spread over the nations, and nation will rise up against nation,
kingdom against kingdom, and states against states, in our own country
and in foreign lands; and they will destroy each other, caring not for
the blood and lives of their neighbours, of their families, or for their
own lives." (JD, 8:123)
The City of New Jerusalem To Be Built.
"And with one heart and with one mind, gather
up your riches that ye may purchase an inheritance which shall hereafter
be appointed unto you. And it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land
of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most
High God" (D&C 45:65-66).
President Wilford Woodruff: "America and
Jerusalem are set forth as two places of gathering for the nations, that
they may escape the judgments about to overtake the world, as the prophets
have testified, that in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance."
(quoted in Companion To Your Study of the Old Testament, p50-51)
"And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that
every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs
flee unto Zion for safety. And there shall be gathered unto it out of every
nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people that shall not be
at war one with another" (D&C 45:68-69).
President John Taylor: "We will build up
our Zion after the pattern that God will show us, and we will be governed
by his law and submit to his authority and be governed by the holy priesthood
and by the word and will of God. And then when the time comes that these
calamities we read of, shall overtake the earth, those that are prepared
will have the power of translation, as they had in former times, and the
city will be translated. And Zion that is on the earth will rise, and the
Zion above will descend, as we are told, and we will meet and fall on each
other's necks and embrace and kiss each other. And thus the purposes of
God to a certain extent will then be fulfilled." (JD, 21:253.)
The Return of The Ten Tribes.
"And they who are in the north countries shall
come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his
voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks,
and the ice shall flow down at their presence. And an highway shall be
cast up in the midst of the great deep.... And they shall bring forth their
rich treasures unto the children of Ephraim, my servants. And the boundaries
of the everlasting hills shall tremble at their presence. And there shall
they fall down and be crowned with glory, even in Zion, by the hands of
the servants of the Lord, even the children of Ephraim" (D&C
President Wilford Woodruff: "All that God
has said with regard to the ten tribes of Israel, strange as it may appear,
will come to pass. They will, as has been said concerning them, smite the
rock, and the mountains of ice will flow before them, and a great highway
will be cast up, and their enemies will become a prey to them; and their
records, and their choice treasures they will bring with them to Zion.
These things are as true as God lives." (JD, 21:301)
Signs In The Heavens.
"...the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall
be turned into blood, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall
be greater signs in heaven above and in the earth beneath" (D&C
The Wicked To Be Destroyed.
"I will take vengeance upon the wicked, for they
will not repent; for the cup of mine indignation is full; for behold, my
blood shall not cleanse them if they hear me not. Wherefore, I the Lord
God will send forth flies upon the face of the earth, which shall take
hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat their flesh, and shall cause
maggots to come in upon them; And their tongues shall be stayed that they
shall not utter against me; and their flesh shall fall from off their bones,
and their eyes from their sockets; And it shall come to pass that the beasts
of the forest and the fowls of the air shall devour them up"
Wilford Woodruff: "God has held the angels
of destruction for many years, lest they should reap down the wheat with
the tares. But I want to tell you now, that those angels have left the
portals of heaven, and they stand over this people and this nation now,
and are hovering over the earth waiting to pour out the judgments. And
from this very day they shall be poured out." (Collected Discourses,
"And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the
ends of the earth shall hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn,
and they that have laughed shall see their folly. And calamity shall cover
the mocker, and the scorner shall be consumed; and they that have watched
for iniquity shall be hewn down and cast into the fire" (D&C
"For the hour is nigh and the day soon at hand
when the earth is ripe; and all the proud and they that do wickedly shall
be as stubble; and I will burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that wickedness
shall not be upon the earth" (D&C 29:9).
Joseph Fielding Smith: "Now, when Christ
comes, we will get a new heaven and a new earth and all of these corruptible
things will be removed. They will be consumed by fire; and somebody said,
'Brother Smith, do you mean to say that it is going to be literal fire?'
I said, 'Oh, no, it will not be literal fire any more than it was literal
water that covered the earth in the flood.'. . .
"To my great astonishment
this has been misunderstood by some, who failed to recognize the irony
of this remark. For the benefit of such I will say I do not know of any
other kind of water except literal water—H2O, the kind we drink, bathe
in, and which makes floods and drowns people. I think fire which consumes
will also be literal when it comes."
(quoted in Companion To
Your Study of the Old Testament, p62)
"And also that of element shall melt with fervent
heat; and all things shall become new, that my knowledge and glory may
dwell upon all the earth" (D&C 101:25).
The Lord Returns To Earth.
Wilford Woodruff: "The Lord Jesus Christ
is coming to reign on earth. The world may say that he delays his coming
until the end of the earth. But they know neither the thoughts nor the
ways of the Lord. The Lord will not delay his coming because of their unbelief,
and the signs both in heaven and earth indicate that it is near. The fig
trees are leafing in sight of all the nations of the earth, and if they
had the Spirit of God they could see and understand them." (JD,
"And there shall be silence in heaven for the
space of half an hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven
be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face
of the Lord shall be unveiled" (D&C 89:95).
"And then they shall look for me, and, behold,
I will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with
power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not
for me shall be cut off" (D&C 45:44).
"For I will reveal myself from heaven with power
and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness
with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand"
(D&C 29:11; see also
"...mine apostles, the Twelve which were with
me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my right hand at the day
of my coming in a pillar of fire, being clothed with robes of righteousness,
with crowns upon their heads, in glory even as I am, to judge the whole
house of Israel" (D&C 29:12).
The Resurrection Begins.
"For a trump shall sound both long and loud, even
as upon Mount Sinai, and all the earth shall quake, and they shall come
forth—yea, even the dead which died in me, to receive a crown of righteousness,
and to be clothed upon, even as I am, to be with me, that we may be one"
"But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an
angel shall sound his trump, and the saints that have slept shall come
forth to meet me in the cloud" (D&C 45:45; see also
The Righteous Rewarded.
"And the saints that are upon the earth, who are
alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him" (D&C
"For they that are wise and have received the
truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been
deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into
the fire, but shall abide the day. And the earth shall be given unto them
for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children
shall grow up without sin unto salvation. For the Lord shall be in
their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king
and their lawgiver." (D&C 45:57-59).
"And Satan shall be bound, that he shall have
no place in the hearts of the children of men" (D&C 45:55).
The Lord's "knowledge and glory may dwell upon
all the earth" (D&C 101:25).
"Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when
the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things—Things which have passed,
and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was
made, and the purpose and the end thereof—Things most precious, things
that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth,
and upon the earth, and in heaven" (D&C 101:32-34).
"And in that day the enmity of man, and the enmity
of beasts, yea, the enmity of all flesh, shall cease from before my face"
"And there shall be no sorrow because there is
no death. In that day an infant shall not die until he is old; and his
life shall be as the age of a tree; And when he dies he shall not sleep,
that is to say in the earth, but shall be changed in the twinkling of an
eye, and shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious."
Joseph Smith: "The world has had a fair
trial for six thousand years; the Lord will try the seventh thousand Himself.
. . . Satan will be bound, and the works of darkness destroyed; righteousness
will be put to the line and judgment to the plummet, and 'he that fears
the Lord will alone be exalted in that day'." (HC, 5:64-65.)
Brigham Young: "In the millennium, when
the kingdom of God is established on the earth in power, glory and perfection,
and the reign of wickedness that has so long prevailed is subdued, the
Saints of God will have the privilege of building their temples, and of
entering into them. . . . And we will have revelations to know our forefathers
clear back to Father Adam and Mother Eve, and we will enter into the temples
of God and officiate for them. Then man will be sealed to man until the
chain is made perfect back to Adam, so that there will be a perfect chain
of priesthood from Adam to the winding-up scene.
"This will be the work
of the Latter-day Saints in the millennium." (JD, 15:138-39)
We Must Prepare for the Second Coming
"Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day
nor the hour" (D&C 133:11).
"Behold, it is my will, that all they who call
on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should
gather together, and stand in holy places; And prepare for the revelation
which is to come, when the veil of the covering of my temple, in my tabernacle,
which hideth the earth, shall be taken off, and all flesh shall see me
together." (D&C 101:22-23)
"Wherefore, prepare ye, prepare ye, O my people;
sanctify yourselves; gather ye together, O ye people of my church, upon
the land of Zion, all you that have not been commanded to tarry. Go ye
out from Babylon. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord"
WHAT IS THE LORD TELLING US?
We are to prepare ourselves for his return. We do not know the day
or the hour, but we need to watch. We need to heed the commandments
and stand in holy places.
President Howard W. Hunter: "This is a day
for action. This is the time for decision, not tomorrow, not next week.
This is the time to make our covenant with the Lord. Now is the time for
those who have been noncommittal or who have had a half-hearted interest
to come out boldly and declare belief in Christ and be willing to demonstrate
faith by works." (CR, Oct 1960)
President John Taylor: "The judgments will
begin at the house of God. We have to pass through some of these things,
but it will only be a very little compared with the terrible destruction,
the misery and suffering that will overtake the world who are doomed to
suffer the wrath of God. It behooves us, as the Saints of God, to stand
firm and faithful in the observance of his laws, that we may be worthy
of his preserving care and blessing." (JD, 21:100.)
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?
President Gordon B. Hinckley: "How do you
prepare for the Second Coming? Well, you just do not worry about it. You
just live the kind of life that if the Second Coming were to be tomorrow
you would be ready. Nobody knows when it is going to happen. … Our responsibility
is to prepare ourselves, to live worthy of the association of the Savior,
to deport ourselves in such a way that we would not be embarrassed if He
were to come among us. That is a challenge in this day and age." (Church
News, 2 Jan 1999, p2)
